Marksmanship Qualification Program (MQP)

Marksmanship Qualification Program (MQP) Chair: Ben Price - mqp@ncrgc.org

Test your accuracy skills with a firearm and earn nationally recognized marksmanship ratings along the way!

The Club is excited to announce the availability of a marksmanship qualification program for members! Whether you do It for the bragging rights or you simply want to prove It to yourself, the Marksmanship Qualification Program (MQP) is one of the best ways to objectively measure your proficiency against a national marksmanship standard.

History:
The NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program (MQP) Is a skill development program first started in 1903. The Program offers shooters a self-paced training platform to develop their shooting skills. It is essentially a shooting drill with achievable standards and increasing levels of difficulty.

Available Disciplines:
The Program currently offers participation in the following disciplines:

  • Pistol
  • Rimfire Rifle
  • Defensive Pistol I
  •  Defensive Pistol II
  • Shotgun Trap

Additional qualifications – from BB gun to muzzleloader to high power rifle – may be added later based on Club interest.

Marksmanship Levels:
All qualification courses of fire have five (5) achievable ratings which present increasing levels of difficulty and which must be earned in sequence. The levels, from easiest to hardest, are ‘Pro-Marksman’, ‘Marksman’, ‘Sharpshooter’, ‘Expert’, & ‘Distinguished Expert’.

Eligibility:
The MQP is available to all eligible Club members and their non-member guests, and NRA membership is not required to receive the qualification completion awards. The one caveat is that, for recognition at the ‘Distinguished Expert’ level, a NRA Instructor, Coach, or Member must witness the entire course of fire. Again, there is no requirement that the participant be a member of the NRA. However, if the person qualifying at ‘Distinguished Expert’ IS a NRA member, they will receive national recognition for their achievement provided that the participant and witness both submit their NRA member numbers along with a ‘Distinguished Expert Recognition Report Form’.

Participation:
Different from a traditional shooting discipline, progression with this program is self-paced and is largely based on the honor system. We provide the venue, score sheet, targets, and consultation on the courses of fire as you advance through the qualification ratings. And as you achieve each rating, we’ll also have the discipline patch, award certificates, qualification rockers, and qualification medals available upon presentation of achievement for a given marksmanship level.

Subject to availability or prior coordination, the Marksmanship Qualification Program liaison will be available to facilitate your participation immediately following range clean-up events as well as during or after most Defensive Pistol discipline events. For more information or to coordinate participation, please email Ben Price at AtLarge1@ncrgc.org. Ben is a NRA-certified Pistol, Rifle, and CCW Instructor and can serve as witness for the ‘Distinguished Expert’ qualification course of fire.

Cost:
The cost to engage in each Marksmanship Qualification course of fire is $5 for Club Members and $10 for non-members. This fee covers the necessary paper targets for that level. Participants will receive the large discipline patch at the onset of the program and, as each rating is successfully completed, they are eligible to obtain all of the corresponding awards for that rating. Award packets, including the Certificate of Completion, rocker patch, and medal, are $10 for Club Members and $15 for non-members.
